Sightseeing in Singapore

We had a great time during the month of June.  A friend's granddaughters were here from Louisiana.  We were able to play tour guide.. and thoroughly enjoyed seeing Singapore through their eyes.  I can't possibly load all the pictures that we took while they were here.. but I'll post a few.

We took them to MacRitchie Reservoir, to get up close and personal with monkeys.  We went to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve to see the monitor lizards.  Although, we saw lizards, we didn't see the big ones.
Hiking at MacRitchie, see the monkeys on the right?
We went to Universal Studios, Singapore Zoo and Singapore Flyer.  We spent a full day on Sentosa.  Sentosa is an island of Singapore, it's basically an "amusement" island.  There are houses and condos, as well, but mostly fun things to do.  We purchased a ticket that we could do 16 attractions, thought it was the best for our money and the amount of time that we had to spend there.  We rented Segways, and rode for about 5 minutes. (you can pay more and ride them longer).  We rode the chair lift up the hill, and did the luge down.  (that was fun!)  We went to the 4d Magix, 3D Pirates, Tiger Sky Tower and the Merlion.

We rode the cable car to Mount Faber,
The Cable Car had an "Angry Birds" Theme..
then over to Sentosa and went to the new Maritime Museum.

We went ice skating and bowling.  We went to Chinatown and Little India.  We took the bumboat cruise on the Singapore River, and had lunch at Hooter's.  We celebrated Independence Day at the American School listening to a band called "Chicken Shack", hamburgers, hot dogs, candy floss (aka cotton candy) and fireworks.  We spent an afternoon at Wild, Wild Wet (water park).

We also enjoyed 4 days/3 nights at Nikoi Island, Indonesia.  That was the girls first time to ride in a taxi, a ferry that you didn't drive your car on, and another new country.  We had a great time.  The weather was beautiful, even though it rained one afternoon.  They enjoyed roasting marshmallows on the beach and watching movies on bean bags at night.  They tried snorkeling, canoeing, and enjoyed jumping off the pier.  I'm not sure what they liked the most.

Lil Prince enjoyed the new swing!
Buddies from way back!  Great memories!

This was one of our "rooms".  We had two rooms, so the kids wanted to bunk together.   See the King size bed on the left, that's in the middle of the room, and then there are 2 of the small beds (like you see on the right of the picture).  Those are mosquito nets over the beds, as there isn't air conditioning.. the doors/windows are open for the breeze.
We loved every minute of the girls being in town.  It made the month of June go by fast.. since most of our friends were gone, it sure helped having them here!  We hated to see them leave, though!

Summer 2012

Here comes SUMMER!!!  We are saying goodbye to friends... some are just leaving for the summer, others are moving away.  We will be taking our "summer trip" to Texas/Oklahoma in August, when most of our friends will be coming back for school.  But I plan to continue having the kids work on Math & Reading throughout the next few months.  Wish I could say they are thrilled about reading & Math!

I found a great idea to help motivate my kids to read this summer.  I found a calendar here. The idea came from a blog at  Women Living Well.  Courtney recommends using stickers to represent the time spent reading which equals money.  I'm going to give this a try.  The money Courtney's kids earn for reading can be spent at Books A Million. (I'll let mine spend theirs at Book Depository or another bookstore, since we don't have a Books a Million here).

I hope this helps my reluctant readers... do you have anything that works for you?

We are looking forward to Vacation Bible School next week.

May God bless your summer!
